It’s a pain when life and work gets in the way of blogging, ay?
There’s been heaps of action here in NZ over the last few days:
- John Key composes his first personal tweet! He’s even cracking jokes! He’ll have more followers than Ashton Kutcher in no time.Wait until he really gets the hang of it.
- New Zealand one of the first to get Swine Flu! Always a world leader…
- Apparently the North and South Islands of NZ have never been officially named. This is an opportunity folks. There need to be suggestions from the public before the boring old unofficial names are made official.
Some suggestions (taken from a Guy Rundle article in one of last week’s Crikey emails):
- North Island: Nuth Island, South Island: Suth Island
- North Island: South Fiji, South Island: North Ice
- North Island: Dom, South Island: Femme
- North Island: East Bondi, South Island: South-east Bondi
- North Island: Landmass East of Australia No.1, South Island: Landmass East of Australia No.2
- North Island: Fush, South Island: Chups
- North Island: Bro’, South Island: Cuz
- North Island: League, South Island: Union
- North Island: Mordor, South Island: The Shire
Any other suggestions from you fine people? I also quite like ‘Jonah’ and ‘Lomu’.

I just read the article… seems Fush and Chups would be most appropriate given that the Maori name for the North Island involves Fish (forgive me for not being able to spell or pronounce the Maori name though)

well they already call Australia the West Island and We still call Australia Home is the new National Anthem, so maybe the East Islands of Australia

I vote for “Under” and “Arm” too
… but the Geographic Board will go with Te Ika a Maui (the Fish of Maui) for the North Island and Te Wai Pounamu (the Way of Greenstone) for the South Island. These names appear on Cook’s charts, there are Maori alternatives (Aotea for the North Is.) but the names seem well accepted.
Victoria University of Wellington’s Maori name is: Te Whare Wananga (= university) o te Upoko o te Ika (of the Head of the Fish) ….. or wait for it if Victoria is too colonial to stay with … yep … Fish Head University!! Good huh!!
